Please add a detailed description to posts and titles. Hey people, About a year ago I bought a regal archtop guitar off of craigslist and can't find any information on it. The person who I bought it from said it belonged to his grandfather.

He was selling it because it just sat around and he wanted it to be played. He could not tell me the year or how his grandfather got it. If I remember correctly, I do not think it is original and he modified it to put in a pick-up to make it acoustic-electric. The bridge may not be original either.

I tried finding a serial number or model and I can't find anything. I was hoping someone could help me figure out what I have here! Also, while I'm posting here, the action is very high on the guitar. How could I fix this and could I do it myself without compromising the sound?

This is a mid-grade Regal from before WWII; the identifies it as a model 312. The company is mostly associated with low-end instruments, but the better guitars like this tend to sound pretty good if they're in playable condition. Unfortunately, their neck joints rarely stay put, and the necks often require a reset - as does yours. That's the only way to fix the action if the bridge is all the way down and the neck is straight. The guitar has undergone a number of modifications. As you thought, it was originally an acoustic, so the pickup and controls were added later. The tailpiece, tuners, pickguard barcket, and bridge are also replacements.

Thanks for your help. The guitar is playable and sounds good. The action is not too high that it is unplayable–it's just uncomfortable and discouraging. Because the guitar is so old, I'm hesitant to just bring it in to anyone for a reset. I'm located in South Bay area, if you (or anyone) could suggest someone I could bring it to? The pickups are horrible on the guitar too.
